My Laser Hair Removal Journey: The first treatment.

If you missed my consultation post, you can view that here.

When I left off, I was saying that the lady who did my consultation asked if I wanted my first treatment right then! Of course I said yes!

I was sent back to the waiting room while I waited for the technician to come and get me. I didn’t even wait 5 minutes and she came and collected me and brought me to a treatment room. There was a big chair similar to a dentist chair but wider. It wasn’t super scary. She then showed me to an adjacent room where I took off everything except my bra. I also used the provided wipes to cleanse the areas where I would be having the hair removal. I was glad for this because even though I had showered before the consultation, I was sweating from my nerves. I know it’s kind of silly, but I didn’t want the technician to be able to smell me while she was doing the procedure, so I was glad for the provided cleaning supplies. I was given the option to either wear a paper gown, or to just use a paper coverup sheet. I decided on the gown and went back into the treatment room.

I approached my nervousness and impeding embarrassment by joking with the lady who did my treatment. It worked like a charm. I made her laugh, and we just chatted like we were friends. I immediately started to feel more at ease. I also took solace in knowing that she has performed this procedure before many times and seen just about everything. In case you can’t tell, I was very embarrassed about having the full bikini done. This was the thing that I was most nervous about.

The first thing she did after asking me a lot of questions about sun exposure and health history was to shave the areas to be treated. Yep, every single area. She started with my side burns, and used a special razor that collected the hair. After shaving an area she looked at the hair under the light to note the color of the hair. She informed me my underarm hair was light brown and my bikini area was a mix of light and medium browns and blonde. I was a bit disappointed in the blonde hair since blonde hairs don’t respond to the laser. I am hoping there was enough melanin in the hair to work!

After every area was shaved she did the lasering. This part was incredibly quick. She first marked the areas to be treated with a white eyeliner pencil. She told me the laser would feel like hot rubber bands popping my skin and that if I needed a break to tell her. She did my sideburns first and I hardly felt anything at all. It just felt like pulses of air and sounded like a “pop, pop, pop” every time the laser went off. Each side burn took maybe 6 pulses. Not uncomfortable in the least. Next, she did my underarms. Since the area was larger, it took longer, but still not painful. I felt it a bit more than I did on my side burns, but I wouldn’t consider it uncomfortable. Lastly was the most dreaded area, the full bikini area. I was sure this area would hurt, and I was partially correct. Most areas didn’t hurt at all and a few areas were mildly uncomfortable. There was just one area that made me jump out of my seat, but after 3 pulses it was done. After she did the entire front part, I had to flip over on my stomach to get the back part. That part was mildly embarrassing, but didn’t hurt at all. Then it was done.

After the lasering was done, she turned on the light to look at my skin. A red reaction is normal, as is some follicular swelling. She told me swelling at the hair follicle was a good thing. I did have a bit of redness and some swelling. The redness was gone by the time I reached the front door, and my skin felt as if nothing had been done to it at all. She put some clear aloe on the treated areas and then I got dressed. I made my appointment for my next treatment in 8 weeks and left with my goodie bag. I was so relieved it was done, and excited about a future with no hair. I was told to treat the treated areas like a mild sunburn and that the hair would fall out in 7-21 days.

My thoughts and tips: If I had known I was going to have my first treatment the same day as my consultation, I would have shaved all the areas to be treated myself. I will do that before my 2nd treatment. I also would have brought my own deodorant and maybe some body spray to use after the procedure.Because of my nerves I did sweat quite a bit. I also would have brought my own tissues to use after the procedure. The aloe was cold and wet and they didn’t have any tissues in the changing room to dry it off a bit. The technician did tell me I have a high pain tolerance. More than once she asked if I needed a break and I did not. She seemed surprised and almost bewildered at times that I wasn’t experiencing pain. If you feel you don’t do well with pain, I’d recommend some ibuprofen before the procedure. To me, the lasering did not hurt as bad as getting a tattoo. The most uncomfortable part of the procedure for me, was getting naked and being on display in front of a stranger, but I did get over that pretty quickly. It helped that my technician was a nurse, and that she’s done the procedure multiple times.

I will post an update 2 weeks after my initial treatment.

My Laser Hair Removal Journey: The Consultation

This post will be the first in a serious of posts I will be doing on my experience having laser hair removal. My hope is that I can answer questions honestly and give a very accurate and honest portrayal of laser hair removal. With that being said, please feel free to email me with questions. I am happy to answer them!

The first thing I did was actually decide to get the procedure done. I choose Ideal Image based on some testimony from one of our local radio DJs and some internet research. I liked that fact that they only deal with laser hair removal. Also they are doing some summer discounts when you get more than 1 area treated, so I wanted to get in on that. I know that some people are concerned about using a “franchise” for laser hair removal. I am certain some of those concerns are valid, but I want to say my experience with this particular location has been very positive so far. I do recommend you visit both locally owned spas AND franchises if available in your area if you are concerned. Your experience is not going to be a good one if you are not 100% comfortable with the location you use, and the people performing the procedure.

I was able to use the ideal image website to set up a consultation. This was great for me because I was still a little nervous about talking to a live person. I know that’s silly, but I have a bit of a phone phobia when it comes to making appointments. I was able to email back and forth with an employee of ideal image, and I felt a lot more comfortable doing this than talking on the phone to someone and telling them the areas I wanted treated. The only downside is that I had to wait almost a month for my consultation since they are so busy this time of the year.

Fast forward to my consultation day. I got a call the day before to confirm, so I did have to talk on the phone once, but it was no biggie. The center was very clean and upscale looking, which I liked. The staff was very friendly and offered me a drink. I filled out 4 pages of questions about medical history and skin type and they made a copy of my ID, then I was taken back to one of the consultation rooms to discuss what I wanted done.

The very nice lady that did my consultation asked me, “so why are you here?” and I chuckled and responded: I guess I want to get rid of some unwanted hair. So then she asked me to rate the 3 areas I wanted done the most and I immediately said “my face.” She looked at me funny because you can’t see hair on my face, but I explained to her that I tweeze it. She then got close to my face to try and see the color of the hair. This is because the lasers don’t work on blonde or light hairs because they target the melanin in the hair. She still couldn’t see any hair so a nurse came to get me and take me to a treatment room to put me under the light. Once she did that, she did confirm I had dark hair in the areas I wanted treated which was my side burns and upper lip, and chin. I felt sort of vulnerable under that light, but I got over it pretty quickly.

I then went back to the consultation room and told the lady I also wanted my under arms done. She then started figuring out what my monthly payments would be based on which 3 areas I would have done. I chose to have 3 areas done based on their current special they had going on. I knew I needed financing so she started doing some math, we went through several different scenarios. Example: It would be xx/month if you get side burns, upper lip, and underarms done. At some point she ran my credit and I was approved for a decent amount of money. She said since laser hair removal is considered a medical procedure, people usually get approved for more because they only do a “soft” credit check. I was indecisive for a few minutes. We chatted and she showed me some before and after photos and explained the procedure in detail. We had built a pretty good rapport, so I decided to ask her about having my full bikini area done. I was a bit embarrassed to ask about this (I’m not really sure why), but by this time in the appointment I knew I had been approved for financing and I was more comfortable so I went ahead and asked her about it. She showed me the areas included in the full bikini and I decided to go for it. So at the end of my consultation I decided to get these 3 areas done.

  • Side burns-I’ve had side burns since I was in middle school and I compulsively tweeze them. I can’t ever get all the hair so I’m self conscious when people are looking at me from the side. The hairs are dark and coarse. I initially wanted my upper lip and chin done as well, but the hair on my upper lip is more fine and easier to remove with waxing, and the hair on my chin is sparse and less noticeable, and although it does bother me, I decided to wait on those areas.
  • Underarms-I suffer with occasional ingrown hairs that are painful in this area, and for some reason, possibly my German heritage, I have huge patches of underarm hair. The hair goes all the way up on my arm a bit. Although this is an easy area to shave, I don’t like how my underarms still have that shadow even after shaving.
  • Full Brazilian Bikini-This is obviously a hard area to shave, and the razor bumps I got were uncomfortable and unsightly. I’m sure a lot you can relate. The thought of never having to shave this area again was very appealing. If you are wondering what the full Bikini included I’m putting that in white text in case it’s TMI for someone. Just highlight right now: Full Bikini included the bikini line, the labia, and the peri-anal area. Basically EVERYTHING from front to back and in between.

I eventually want more areas done when I have these areas paid off. I want to get my upper lip and chin done, and my legs and possibly my stomach, but I chose the 3 areas that I felt would impact me the most positively.

If you are wondering about price, these 3 areas ended up being around $4500. With financing I will be paying $129/month for 36 months with no interest. I can pay it off sooner if I can which I will try to do. I will have to be a bit more self disciplined in my spending habits, but that’s not a bad thing for me, since I tend to overspend.

So after I had decided which areas to have done, she told me exactly what to expect and I signed what seemed like a TON of papers. The package included 9 treatments for each area. Several 8 weeks apart initially, then 1 more 1 year after having the first treatment just to get any stray hairs. She explained that after the first treatment, 20% of the hair is gone and after the second treatment, 50% is gone, and so on until you get all the hair. It’s permanent. She explained the laser can be uncomfortable for some people. She told me after the first treatment, the hairs would fall out in 7-21 days, then right before my next treatment, I would get new hair growth. Hair grows in cycles which is why it takes multiple treatments. She also told me I would get a bag full of products as part of my package. I wasn’t expecting that, so it was an added bonus!

At this point I felt fully educated about what to expect and I’d signed all the papers. She then asked me if I wanted my first treatment right then!! I wasn’t expecting that and I got a little adrenaline rush, but I went ahead and said yes!! I was feeling very excited/nervous at this point, but more excited than anything!

In my next post I will tell you all about the first treatment.
